Fall Family Fun
Day 1 - Canoes and Pioneers in Peterborough
The Holiday Inn Waterfront Hotel is conveniently located for your fall family fun adventures. Start this itinerary off by checking into an accommodation that offers you a swimming pool and lake views, as well as shopping, restaurants, cafes and parks all within walking distance.
Your first stop is The Peterborough Museum & Archives. Learn more about local history, beginning with Indigenous history through to the arrival of Europeans and the growth of the agriculture and lumber industries. Rotating featured exhibits expand the range of subjects, and a number of kid-friendly attractions mean there’s something for everyone. As a bonus for those travelling with family there’s a great playground just outside, and the historic Peterborough Lift Lock is just a short walk away.
For lunch head to the Café district of Peterborough on Hunter Street for some gourmet and definitely kid-friendly pizza at the Night Kitchen.
Travel back in time for the afternoon at Lang Pioneer Village. Learn about the fall harvest during the pioneer days from costumed interpreters, and explore the many preserved homes and businesses. There may even be some fall treats to taste.
For dinner, check out Ashburnham Ale House for their variety of “Sammiches,” pizzas, burgers, delicious house-made mains and a lengthy drinks list.
If there’s still room for dessert, Flossophy Confectioneries is just down the road.

Day 2 -Buckhorn & Riverview Park and Zoo
In the morning enjoy some pumpkin picking at McLean’s Berry Farm in Buckhorn. Check out their farm store for jams, maple syrup, maple candy and fresh seasonal produce. This area offers some gorgeous falls walks, and do check McLean’s website to see if Pumpkinfest is a go this year.
For lunch, pack a picnic and from one of the local grocery stores and spend the afternoon at Riverview Park and Zoo, which is FREE family fun. Kids will love the animals, the extensive playground, and the miniature train ride.
Dine at Kettle Drums Restaurant in the evening, where they serve the tastiest mac and cheese.

Day 3 - Indian River Reptile Zoo & The Big Apple
From now until the end of September, we highly suggest visiting the Indian River Reptile Zoo and Dinosaur Park. You can either drive or walk through the park and have a prehistoric experience with over 60 lifesize replica animatronic dinosaurs.
From Indian River you will enjoy the scenic route to Colborne, located in Northumberland County, where you will enjoy all things apple! Take the family apple picking at Pieter’s Apple Orchard and then explore The Big Apple—no, we’re not talking about New York. This is a giant Apple easily spotted from 401.
For lunch see what’s on offer at the food truck and then sample some mouthwatering apple pie. There are plenty of outdoor activities such as Mini Putt, shuffleboard, bocce ball, ping pong and the popular kid’s train ride.
Drive to Cobourg and check into the Best Western Plus Cobourg Inn & Convention Centre for a night’s rest after a busy day.

Day 4 - Drive Home
After Breakfast you can either spend another day exploring the beautiful Northumberland County or enjoy the drive home.
