Savour the Season at a Cottage Resort

Summer days might seem to stretch forever, but fall is just the opposite—the beauty comes from knowing the days are getting shorter, and the leaves are bound to fall. Before they do, though, they go out with a painterly display of colour that pairs perfectly with tranquil hikes, warm sweaters, and cozy cottages.

Don’t miss the chance to get away for the weekend or a mid-week break during nature’s finest hour. We’ve compiled a list of cottage resorts throughout Kawarthas Northumberland that provide a relaxing, rewarding getaway.

A stay at Southview Cottages provides front row tickets to the beauty of Rice Lake in fall. This third-generation, family-owned and operated resort has 60 acres of beautiful scenery to explore, including an 1800-foot boardwalk that makes the perfect place to take in the view. Other amenities include kayak, canoe, and boat rentals, sports facilities, and on-site nature trails. Two and three-bedroom cottages are available, depending on the size of your group.

On the south side of Rice Rice Lake you’ll find Sunset Retreat. Looking out across the bay in fall, expect a riot of colour along a forested ridge. If the view sparks your wanderlust, you’re a short drive away from the expansive trail network of Northumberland County Forest—or maybe you’ll chose to get out on the water with a pontoon boat rental or a paddlecraft. Cottages range from one to four bedrooms and can easily accommodate families.

Elmhirst’s Resort on the north shore of Rice Lake has an long history of excellence in the region. Featuring 30 cottages spread across 240 acres, guests can enjoy a range of features including 10km of on-site trails, add-on spa packages, and farm-to-table dining options showcasing ingredients raised right on Elmhirst’s own grounds. Each cabin includes a fireplace, for those cooler fall nights.

Beachwood Resort just celebrated its 100th anniversary, and the tradition of hospitality continues into the 21st century. Located on a quiet country road on the shores of Lower Buckhorn Lake, you’ll find ample views across the water and 5km of nature trail. The on-site restaurant Frederick’s serves chef-prepared meals along with its excellent wine list; if you’re visiting after the Thanksgiving weekend, inquire ahead to confirm the restaurant’s availability.

Just outside the charming village of Lakefield on the shores of Katchewanooka Lake you’ll find Lake Edge Cottages. The owners care deeply about environemntal stewardship, so you’ll find eco-conscious features here such as an EV charging station and a large solar array that powers much of the resort. Lake Edge is also pet-friendly, so you can feel good about bringing your furry friends along for the trip.

Stoney Lake lives up to its name, with dramatic Canadian Shield geography accentuating the rugged treeline. On its banks Pine Vista Resort offers a range of comfortable accommodations to help you enjoy the beauty of the surroundings, ranging from one-bedroom cottages to large townhouses perfect for a family gathering.

Another incredible Stoney Lake location, Viamede Resort sits along the Stoney Lake Trails network, providing 9 km of exceptionally beautiful hiking. On-site you’ll find not one but two dining options, with the 1885 Restaurant and Patio offering friendly, casual service and Mount Julian preparing locally inspired 5, 7, and 9-course tasting menus with wine pairings. Viamede is also pet-friendly, so you won’t need to worry about finding a pet-sitter this fall.

One of Kawartha Lakes’ premier resorts, Eganridge‘s cottages offer gorgeous views of Sturgeon Lake. Book the Honeymoon Cottage, and you’ll even have access to your own private jacuzzi. Whichever accommodation you choose, you’ll have access to Eganridge’s luxurious spa and dining packages. You’ll also find a full range of other amenities, including canoe, kayak, and SUPs free for guest use.

This lovingly restored heritage inn on the banks of Balsam Lake offers four cottages in addition to its six inn rooms. Enjoy the waterfront and the Saucy Willow‘s beautiful gardens, all within walking distance of downtown Coboconk with its range of restaurants and shops, and relax in the tranquil Kawartha Lakes landscape.

Sounds in Nature: Inspired by the Season at Westben

“Music in nature’s always been a part of Westben,” says Donna Bennett, co-founder of Westben Centre for Connection & Creativity through Music. It’s a mission statement most people will associate with the Barn, a 400-seat timber-frame structure with grand doors that roll back to let the summer ambience in. With the Sounds in Nature event, the storied Campbellford arts centre is taking that philosophy one step further.
